University Interscholastic League officials say news that Marion Jones used steroids is disappointing. It comes as they're preparing a new program to educate students and coaches about the dangers of steroids.

In a video put together by the UIL, professional athletes, college athletes and coaches talk about the consequences of steroid use.

"I think it's something that’s very important to our coaches and school administrators," said Mark Cousins, UIL Athletic Coordinator.

The UIL is using the video as an educational tool. A new law requires it.

It also requires random drug testing at high schools which could begin this fall.

"The message is -- steroids are cheating," said Cousins. "It's certainly tough when people, athletes consider role models, have found to have done things that may not be proper or we might not condone."

"It's a disappointment, but it's almost numbing now because it happens to such a high degree -- what we try to do is teach it as a life lesson," said Mike Zierlein, head football coach and athletic coordinator at Aikins High School in South Austin. "I think our biggest issue right now is the lack of education on steroids."

He says random testing is fine, but teaching athletes about the consequences of steroid use is most important.

"When you talk about Marion Jones, she was able to have world records and gold medals, and her fame lasted for about four to eight years. But now for the rest of her life, she's a disgraced athlete," said Zierlein.

It’s a message school officials are hoping athletes hear.
