May is Mental Health Awareness Month

Nearly 14 million people live with a serious mental illness such as major depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Mental health is an important part of your overall health. That s why May is designated as Mental Health Awareness Month.

Karen Ranus, executive director of the Austin Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), joined KVUE to talk about Mental HealthAwareness Month.

NAMI is hosting a community meeting at 7 p.m. at the Austin State Hospital Nifty-Fifty Diner at 4110 Guadalupe Street. The organization is also speaking to parents and students at Vista Ridge High School at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday to address mental health needs of youth.
