World-class runner teaches Austin students about Africa

AUSTIN – A world-class runner spoke to students at Pecan Springs Elementary School in Austin on Thursday, teaching them about Africa and the need for water.

Gilbert Tuhabonye, originally from Burundi, spoke to students as part of the Andy Roddick Foundation Summer Learning Program.

"It's kind of easy to resonate with these kids. They are learning about water, we are helping villages in Africa, they are learning about Africa," said Tuhabonye.

The program helps under-served children, teaching them math and science skills over six weeks.

This year is the second year for the program, which now includes 80 children. In 2014, the children who attended did better in school the following year.
