AUSTIN - Austin, Texas has become one of the fastest growing cities in America with a population doubling about every 20 years.
On Nov. 16, KVUE News aired the Boomtown: KVUE Live Doc which took a deeper look at the pros and cons of the thriving city. Also, discussing aspects of old and new Austin from the viewpoints of veteran Austinites, new city dwellers and what the city is doing about it.
We wanted to know what you, the viewer, thought about the topic. Using the hashtag, #Boomtown, tweets were flying before and during the special. Here's what some of you said:
@Mr_JustYn, who moved to Austin more than 12 years ago said he's "kind of a big deal."
But John Ryan said he might be part of the city's problem.
If you are tweeting under this hashtag, and you've lived here less than 20 years, you are part of the problem. #Boomtown— John Ryan (@JohnRyan64) November 17, 2017
@genvc said things in Austin really started to change two decades ago.
20 years ago? Some say 20 years ago is when it started to suck. The point is- cities change, how we handle that change determines what kind of city we live in. #Boomtown— genevieve (@genvc) November 17, 2017
Brandon B said Austin is the new Los Angeles.
They've turned Austin into LA. It has become a nightmare. Traffic sucks. Cost of living is unaffordable. Love my city, sadly can't wait to move out#boomtown— Brandon B (@KingBee0102) November 17, 2017
@sirced said Austin's problems are about missed opportunities.
The city is growing so fast & they don’t know how to handle it. So many opportunities were missed in the past & now they’re rushing & do whatever to make up for it & killing the city in the process. There’s little “ATX” left in ATX. #boomtown— CED (@sirced) November 17, 2017
Max Davis worries about water.
#boomtown. Water wells were drying up all over central TX during the last drought cycle. Now, development is full speed ahead.... As we move toward the next drought cycle where will we get the H2O for a few more hundred thousand people?— Max Davis (@MaxDDavis) November 17, 2017
Kinseli worries about where her next roommate is coming from.
Austin is #boomtown yet ya girl can’t find a roommate??????— Kinseli (@KinseliJazz) November 17, 2017
And, of course, Evil MoPac joined in on the conversation.
Although Austinites may not agree on a solution to their city's growth, they can definitely agree it's a problem.
