Watch as young kids celebrate Halloween in Austin's Rundberg neighborhood

Rundberg Halloween

It used to be one of the most dangerous places to live in all of Austin, now the Rundberg area is experiencing major changes including how they celebrate Halloween.

For the first time, the community is coming together for an area-wide Halloween celebration with more than 20 different stops including schools and rec centers.

All along Rundberg, there will be places for kids to get candy, get their faces painted and try out different crafts.

In addition, the Austin Police Department is deploying eight extra officers to make sure families are safe while they are enjoying the Halloween festivities.

Senior Police Officer Rafael Kianes is a District Representative in the Rundberg community.

“When I first started patrolling out here about nine years ago you didn't see families out walking around,” said Kianes. “We’ve had a 15 percent reduction in violent crime, we've had an 80 percent reduction in prostitution calls and 50 percent reduction in aggravated robberies."

It’s part of a community-wide effort called the Restore Rundberg Project. Restore Rundberg has been underway for several years.
