Report: UT had the highest number of reported rapes on campus in 2014

Behind the sex assault numbers at UT

The University of Texas at Austin finds itself on another list and school officials are addressing it. Earlier this month, the U.S. Department of Education stated that UT had the highest number of reported rapes on campus in 2014 out of all Texas universities.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, 17 rapes were reported on campus in 2014, with 13 of the cases taking place in on-campus housing facilities.

Linda Millstone works closely with UT's Title IX office. Wednesday, Millstone told KVUE the numbers are reflective of the culture at UT. Millstone say students should feel comfortable reporting crimes. School leaders created a number of preventative measures for victims.

"Get Consent, Not On My Campus and things like that. We also have a lot of support instances that help students move forward positively," Millstone said.

KVUE looked at other colleges close in population with UT and the number of reported rapes in 2014 are about the same or even higher, according to data from the U.S. Department of Education. University of Central Florida reported 17 rapes in 2014 and Ohio State University reported 20 the same year.

Ted Rutherford with the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault says UT is moving in the right direction.

Rutherford says sexual assaults and rape crimes often go under-reported, and not many cases are prosecuted depending on the situation.

"Until we can make it where sexual assaults are not happening at all we need to have environments where people feel safe and they can get the resources they need," Rutherford said.
