AUSTIN – Uber and the University of Texas have announced a “multi-year sponsorship” to make the company the official ridesharing sponsor of Texas Athletics.
The ride-hailing company said in a release that Uber customers will have exclusive pickup and drop-off areas at Darrell K. Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium, Frank Erwin Center, UFCU Disch-Falk Field and Bass Concert Hall.
“Uber is proud to partner with Texas Athletics, Texas Exes, Texas Performing Arts, and RecSports to improve mobility for students, fans, and patrons,” said David Brightman, General Manager for Uber Austin in a statement. “Through this collaboration, we hope to fundamentally enhance the Longhorn experience — whether that’s on game day, during a special event, or simply getting home from campus after a night at the gym.”
“As a University, we constantly strive to provide students, alumni, and fans with the best experience possible on game day,” added men’s athletics director Mike Perrin. “We are pleased to have Uber join in helping us achieve this goal.”
Uber and fellow ride-hailing company Lyft both returned to Austin in May 2017 after a one-year absence. The companies pulled out of Austin in May 2016 after voters called for fingerprint background checks for its drivers. The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 100 to override the city’s regulations.
