Officials: Swimmer found in Lake Travis committed suicide

Family finds body of missing swimmer

AUSTIN - The swimmer who went missing and was later found dead Saturday evening committed suicide, according to the Travis County Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner said that before 26-year-old Jose Antonio Almendarez-Lopez died, he made suicidal threats to family members and had consumed alcohol.

Austin-Travis County EMS said that Almendarez-Lopez went underwater and did not resurface at the Paradise Cove Marina around 6 p.m. Saturday.  Lake Travis Fire Rescue sent swimmers and a boat into the water to search for the swimmer. STAR Flight also responded to the scene.

At approximately 6:45 p.m. ATCEMS said the search transitioned into a recovery operation.

ATCEMS announced that the swimmer's body was found around 8 p.m. The swimmer's family assisted in the search against the Travis County Sheriff's Office's request.

This is the seventh drowning on Lake Travis this year.
