Capitol gets security improvements

06:48 PM CST on Thursday, December 20, 2007

Associated Press

A new security plan for the Texas Capitol includes different routes for vehicles going to and from the Austin building -- and moving a busy bus stop.

Work is under way to relocate the Capitol Metro bus stop from its current site south of the Capitol.

No details were offered on the new location for the bus stop, used by many low-income Austin residents to get to and from work.

Governor Rick Perry says the plan will contribute to the safety of those working at or visiting the Capitol. He says it will "from an aesthetic viewpoint, give an appropriate visual to the state capitol."

Other changes include the addition of retractable barriers at entry and exit points of the Capitol grounds and construction of a gatehouse for Department of Public Safety officials.

The $3.3 million project will be funded through the State Preservation Board.
