Austin council members draw up new big box rules

The Austin City Council has drawn up with new rules for big box stores in response to a feud over the proposed construction of a super-sized Wal-Mart in North Austin.

Developers want Wal-Mart to build a two-story "urban" store at Northcross Mall at Burnet Road and Anderson Lane, but many residents in the surrounding neighborhoods oppose the plan because of traffic concerns.

More than 100 speakers addressed the Austin City Council Thursday night to oppose construction of that Wal-Mart. Those who spoke at the meeting say they believe the store is a bad fit for a residential area.

The new rules for big box stores will require the city to notify neighbors of proposed stores and have a public review process for those projects.

The new rules that were drawn up would not prevent the controversial Wal-Mart.

On Friday evening, "Responsible Growth For Northcross", the group opposing the Wal-Mart, said the fight was not over. They are asking the city council to ban 24-hour stores at the mall. They're also asking developers to re-draw their plans.
