Page White, 38, was arrested over the weekend and formally charged with improper photo without consent.
According to sources close to the investigation, the improper photography did not involve nude photos, but the photographs of young women were deemed to be improper.
He was first spotted over the Thanksgiving holiday at Highland Mall with his camera by a clerk and a security card. He surrendered his camera and Austin police launched a full investigation. When police downloaded the images from the camera, they decided he needed to be taken into custody.
Just how many Travis High School students were allegedly videotaped is not known, but investigators say they know improper video of several young girls was taken on campus, more than once.
"During different times at the school -- I can't be specific when it was going on during school. I know in his classroom, there were some videos being taken, some in the hallways. AISD helped identify locations within the school," said Brian Lloyd, Austin police.
When taken into custody, White was with several Travis High students in San Antonio. They were taking part in an academic competition.
White joined AISD in fall 2000. He started out teaching at Keeling Jr. High before moving on to Travis High School. He will not be allowed back on campus and has been placed on administrative leave with pay. Some of the students we spoke to say he will not be missed.
"Was he a good teacher? No. What type of guy was he? You'd ask him questions, and he would not help you," said Christina Chavez, student.
According to his arrest warrant, White used a small video camera and would follow young girls. Investigators downloaded the camera memory card and video files. Even those that had been deleted.
Investigators say one file indicated the images were of high school seniors. Another was titled second period. His school computer and another from his house are now being analyzed.
As far as the school goes, it appears just to be voyeurism.
Travis H.S. Principal Rene Garganta sent a letter home with students Monday regarding the arrest. Garganta said there was very little extra information to share because the case remains under investigation.
"I am now working closely with District Human Resource officials to ensure that qualified personnel quickly assume Mr. White's teaching responsibilities," Garganta stated.
Investigators do not have any evidence of any physical sexual contact. White is currently free on bond.
