HD debate: Is plasma better than LCD?
06:46 PM CST on Monday, December 10, 2007
On February 17 2009, the FCC will require all TV stations across the country to broadcast their signals in high-definition.
High-definition TV’s have been on the market for a few years, but they are expected to be a big seller this holiday season because of dropping prices and better technology
Retailers said this biggest question most people have is whether to buy a plasma or LCD TV.
Harlan Lawson with A&B TV said there are several key questions they ask all their customers first.
"A LCD monitor is going to be sharper and with finer detail with still images and no glare off an LCD panel," he said.
Lawson said that makes it a slightly better choice if the TV is going to be near a window. LCD’s are also lighter and can be hung on a wall or moved easier.
According to the Home-Tech Answers website the main disadvantage with LCD TV’s -- if you are not watching them close to straight on they can start to look a little pale.
Lawson said plasma TV’s have always offered the better picture for the larger screens, but they are prone to burning.
That means if a static image is on a screen for a significant amount of time, a faint after-image may linger for up to an hour.
“Burning is probably the biggest worry on a plasma panel. It's not as bad as it use to be, but it can still happen," said Lawson.
It is also recommended to avoid plasma if you plan to play video games on the TV.
The big differences between LCD and plasma TV’s have narrowed significantly over the past years.
Home Tech Answers suggests not only look at price, but also brand names with proven reliability.
