Jimmy Lewis Fennell, Jr., 35, was accused of assaulting a woman detained in connection with a domestic disturbance, according to the Williamson County District Attorney's Office.
“To make sure that this case can be heard by Williamson County citizens without any predetermined opinions,” said District Attorney John Bradley, “all details will be presented in court during the trial.”
Fennell's bail amount was set at $250,000.
Judge Burt Carnes was expected to set a date for Fennell's initial court appearance soon.
"We take these allegations and this incident very seriously," says Capt. Roland Waits with the Georgetown Police Department. "We want to make sure we protect the public's trust and that we try to re-instill some integrity into the community and the organization."
His father, Jimmy Fennell, Sr. told KVUE News Tuesday afternoon that his son is "a good man" and he's "done nothing wrong. Everybody that knows him knows that he's right."
Fennell, Sr. says his son has retained an attorney.
This isn't the first time Fennell has been in the public eye. A little more than 10 years ago, his fiancé 19-year old Stacy Stites was found murdered in Bastrop. She had been strangled. Rodney Reed was arrested, tried and sentenced to death for the crime. Reed's defenders, however, claim he's innocent. They have waged an on-going internet campaign to win Reed a new trial and have claimed that others, including Fennell, may have played a role his Stites' death.
Fennell is on administrative leave with pay pending the conclusion of the internal affairs investigation. He is a 7 year veteran of the department.
