DPS trains largest class of new recruits
04:40 PM CST on Tuesday, December 4, 2007
Texas Department of Public Safety cadets worked on arrest control tactics today. The recruits are part of the DPS's largets recruitment class.
DPS officials are trying to fill positions caused by retirements and 181 new positions created by the Texas Legislature.
The cadets spent time sparring with each other today -- learning how to control violators in worst-case scenarios.
DPS Cadet Aaron Early said the exercise is designed to get them to operate when they're past exhaustion.
"I was running out of steam, but you've just got to keep pushing hard -- subdue the subject or else youre not coming home," he said.
The DPS hopes to graduate 180 cadets from the 26-week school in March.
