Not all Longhorn fans sold on trip to Holiday Bowl

The Longhorns will be heading to the Holiday Bowl in San Diego on December 27. It’s their fourth trip, but also their first time playing the Pac 10’s Arizona State Sundevils.

Fans wanting to go watch the game may be in for a sticker shock. Roundtrip flights to San Diego are running about $550. Two nights at the famed Hotel Del Coronado will run about $600. Game tickets are still available, but only a handful of them on Craigslist.com are offered at less than $100. Add to that rental transportation and entertainment, and it’s a hefty two-day trip.

“I think San Diego is a little far. I don’t have a lot of money to go over there,” said Ashley Cline, UT student.

But the game isn’t out of reach for many alumni. The Texas Exes Alumni Association already has a trip organized.

“Our package is $599 per person, double occupancy,” said Betty Cotton, Texas Exes.

That package includes two nights at the same hotel as the team, a welcome reception, transfers to the game, tailgating, game tickets and refreshments on the way home.

But it doesn’t include plane tickets. Cotton says that’s because many people want to stay in San Diego to see the sights. It’s tempting enough that some students are getting creative.

“A lot of college students don’t have enough money to fly but they can afford the cost of a hotel if they get a bunch of people in one car and they drive over there; and what they save on airplane tickets they can spend restaurants on or seeing the sights,” said UT student Nick Wenker.

But with the Longhorns' less than stellar season, not everyone is sold on spending the big bucks.

“That would be pretty expensive, so I guess I’ll just have to watch it on high def or something to make up for it,” said Jesse Vasquez, UT student.

Flights are where people can save the most money. The airline tickets to San Diego were the most expensive. People planning to rent a car could save money by flying into nearby airports. Orange County/John Wayne is about an hour and a half away, but a lovely drive down the coast. Los Angeles Airport is even farther north, but still within a drive; although -- be warned -- rush hour traffic could be a nightmare.
