Big Brothers & Big Sisters warn of holiday scam
10:33 PM CST on Friday, November 30, 2007
You might want to think twice before opening your door and your wallet this holiday season.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Texas is warning the public about two imposters going door to door asking for money for the organization.
The problem is the men don't work for the non-profit agency.
"We do not solicit door to door donations at all" says Melanie Chasteen of Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
The agency was first alerted to the imposters by two citizens who called last week, one in Lago Vista and one in West Campus.
In each case an African American man knocked on the door and presented what looked like a brochure for Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
"It just looked like a cut and paste job, it looked like a bunch of brochures that had been cut, pasted and eliminated and that wasn't even cut properly it just looked totally unprofessional" said one neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous.
One of the imposters said he was trying to raise $5000 to help send disadvantaged kids to a trip.
Big Brothers and Big Sisters gets most of their money from annual fundraisers and from individual donations and grants.
Citizens are advised not to open their doors to solicitors, instead ask them to leave the information on the door. If any other concerns arise, call 311.
