Car towing at UT-A&M game upsets Austin man
11:21 PM CST on Saturday, November 29, 2008
An Austin man is taking action after he says a group of football fans were ripped-off Thursday night.
Plenty of Texas fans stuck around to enjoy every ounce of Thursday’s sweet win over Texas A&M, including Clark Nisbett.
“We stayed for the whole game, and came back to this parking lot and there were oh, 6 or 8 people floating around that didn't have their cars here,” said Nisbett.
That is when Nisbett's night turned sour.
“You know you've been ripped off; you know that your car's been towed.”
Nisbett had paid a man 20 bucks to park in this lot off of Medical Arts Street, but his car was still towed.
It cost him another $200 to get it back...
Signs are posted around the lot, but Nisbett says it looked like the property owners were willingly renting out the spaces.
The towing company, J&J towing -- has an unsatisfactory rating with the Better Business Bureau.
But there is no evidence to link them to the people who charged Nisbett to park.
“That’s what I think may be the larger story here besides me and a bunch of other people here got ripped off,” said Nisbett.
Still -- he's filed complaints against J&J towing with Austin police and Texas Towing Compliance, an advocate web site for scam victims.
“If you get towed, the storage facility has to tell you the name, address, and phone number of the person who authorized the tow,” said Pat Johnson, who runs Texas Towing Compliance.
He says any time a driver feels they were un-lawfully towed, they should file a complaint with the Texas department of licensing and regulation, action Nisbett is already taking.
“It was a bad way to end a good night,” said Nisbett.
We contacted J&J towing this afternoon, but the staff was unable to comment on the matter at this time.
