Backyard burning sparks Mustang Ridge brush fire

04:34 PM CST on Wednesday, November 26, 2008

KVUE News

Travis and Caldwell County firefighters battled a 30-acre brush fire early Wednesday afternoon.

Winds drove the fire between homes off Highway 183 and Old Lockhart Road in Mustang Ridge.

The fire crept as close of 200 feet from some homes and sheds. Neighbors were out dousing hot spots as firefighters were knocking down the fire.

"Most of the time they're smaller. In this case, it started back where nobody could get to it so it burned quite a bit and the wind carried it quite far before they could get to it - looked like," said Hyram Reed, lives nearby.

Fire officials say people burning brush in their backyard started the fire.

Several homes were threatened, but no property was lost. No one was hurt.

The area is under a burn ban. Mustang police will decide whether to issue a citation.
