Police, animal agencies seize nearly 50 cats
10:01 AM CST on Monday, November 19, 2007
Dozens of cats were moved to the Austin Humane Society Sunday after a Travis County judge ruled their owner had to give them up.
Police found 47 cats in Kelley Saveikas’s home, which was described as filthy. A judge decided the conditions there were unacceptable, and ordered the confiscation on grounds of animal cruelty.
During the rescue on Friday one cat was found dead in an upstairs closet, and it appeared to have been dead for more than a month.
Some the cats have been placed in homes, but 28 are now up for adoption at the Humane Society. The rest are at Town Lake Animal Shelter.
The Humane Society is accepting canned cat food, non-clumping litter, toys, and monetary donations to help with the cats' care.
Saveikas will get to keep 3 of the cats if she undergoes psychological counseling.
