Blind couple exchanges vows
12:05 AM CST on Sunday, November 18, 2007
A South Austin man is on the road to recovery after a tragic collision last month. The victim and his fiancé say the crash pushed them to take a big step early.
Carlos Aleman and Diane Bomar took their wedding vows Saturday afternoon, a few months earlier than expected.
With the help of their Seeing Eye dogs Thunder and Haven, the blind couple met at the end of the aisle in the living room of Diane's home.
"It was like everything just...all of the stress and everything that's been going on just melted away," said Bomar.
The two sat side by side. Carlos was still confined to a wheelchair. He hasn't been able to walk since a car struck him in late October. He and Diane were walking home from the library on a grassy stretch of land off Convict Hill when the car came around the corner and hit him. Pieces of the car are still on the land. It was that moment the newlyweds say that changed their lives and their wedding date.
"Things just happened so fast in just such a split second that day, that it just makes time...just realize how precious time is that day," said Bomar.
“All of those things got inside of us and we just decided we wanted to married as soon as possible,” said Aleman.
The wedding ceremony was small. Family and close friends came to celebrate the early nuptials.
"I feel a lot of emotions you know, I thank God first of all, because I think it's a miracle that he's even alive," said Carlos’ mother, Ruth Aleman.
"I still can't believe that we're married, it's just wonderful," said Bomar.
The couple hasn't had time to pick out wedding bands, so for the ceremony they used rings they already had. As for the accident, Carlos and Thunder, who was also hit, are both still recovering.
The driver of the car, Michael Garrett Hageman, 19, is facing several felony charges.
