Warrants have been issued for two people the Austin Police Department said were involved in taking copper from a grocery store's air conditioning units.

Amber Cherie Newton, 22, and Darin Patrick Bell, 43, are charged with theft for allegedly taking copper from an Albertson's at 1807 W. Slaughter Lane in October.

According to police, officers were called out to the grocery store on October 15 and found Bell and Newton were on the roof.

The two said they were hired to do work by a man who works for Stonecrest Investments, a group that cleans the property at 1807 W. Slaughter Lane.

The man later told police he had given Bell permission to remove the units.

Albertson's employees and the store's property manager said they had no knowledge of the work. According to the warrant, the situation appeared to be a misunderstanding.

On October 18, police were called out to the store again. Two witnesses said they had seen two men and a woman working on the roof. The officer found that some of the air conditioning units had been tampered with. Paneling from an air conditioning unit and power cords were missing from the roof. Both contained copper.

Both the group that cleans the property and Albertson's representatives said they did not tell Bell or Newton to continue the work after October 15.

The witnesses later identified Bell and Newton, and said that Newton told them that the workers were getting paid $10 an hour and got to keep the metals.

Bell and Newton's bonds are set at $4,000 each.
