Standoff at Barton Creek Greenbelt ends in shooting
06:37 PM CST on Friday, November 4, 2005
A man was rushed to the hospital Friday afternoon after a tense standoff on the Barton Creek Greenbelt with Austin. It happened near Barton Skyway and Spyglass, off MoPac Expressway in South Austin. KVUE News Police say a 911 call came in around 11 a.m. Friday. According to the call, a man was out on the Greenbelt with a shot gun. The caller believed he may have intended to hurt himself. Witnesses described to KVUE News what they saw. "One of the neighbors saw somebody running around with a shotgun -- (she) said it was loaded, so, the cops were down there interviewing her. The SWAT team, bomb truck -- the armored truck -- showed up. They were down there about two and a half hours, then you heard a shot," said Roberto Espinoza, who owns a nearby shop. "Pretty weird kind of a day... pretty wild." When police arrived, they made contact with the man, and when SWAT officers made it to the scene, their hostage negotiation team talked with the man for two hours. They say he became agitated and raised his gun. Police say officers used flash-bang distracters and even rubber bullets -- both proved ineffective. That's when the first shot was fired. KVUE News APD SWAT team members respond to the scene Friday. Police say the standoff ended when the man shot himself. "One of the SWAT officers fired one shot, and the individual also fired one shot. We believe the individual fired a shot that was self-inflicted," said Kevin Buckman, with the Austin Police Department. Barton Hills Elementary School, which is in the area, went under lockdown until 2 p.m., according to AISD officials, until it was determined that the police situation was contained. "This is crazy. This is a peaceful area. I've never had any break-ins. I've never heard anybody talk about break-ins. You know, it's 78704, so it's all Barton Spring attitude around here. Everyone's really nice," said Christopher Anderson, who lives nearby. The man was taken to Brackenridge hospital, where he remains in stable condition. There is no word on his identity. The investigation is ongoing. KVUE News
