Assault charges filed against man shot by police

Austin police filed assault charges Wednesday against a man who was shot by an officer. Police found Ernest Roberts, 43, inside an apartment in the 8200 block of Sam Rayburn Drive in North Austin while responding to a call of "unknown nature" Monday. They say he had two knives and made threatening gestures. Officer William Heilman shot Roberts once in the cheek. Roberts was treated for the non-life threatening injury. Roberts has been charged with aggravated assault, which is a first degree felony, according to Austin police. Bond was set at $50,000. The Austin Chapter of the NAACP is also investigating the shooting. KVUE News
