Red light camera activated in Northwest Austin

12:50 PM CDT on Friday, October 31, 2008

KVUE News

The City of Austin activated another red light camera Friday.

The camera is located at MoPac south and Howard Lane/Wells Branch Parkway. It's designed to deter drivers from running red lights and increase safety.

Other red light cameras are located at Interstate 35 and 11th Street, I-35 and 15th Street and MoPac at Highway 290.

Red light camera locations were selected by police and city traffic engineering staff members, based on the number of cars that use those intersections and how many crashes have taken place. All red light camera intersections have a sign that states they are photo enforced.

The Austin City Council passed the red light traffic camera initiative in November 2007.
