Army officer faces court-martial after soldier's death
07:45 AM CDT on Wednesday, October 31, 2007
FORT HOOD -- An Army officer faces court-martial for allegedly failing to take precautions during a Fort Hood training exercise in which a soldier died.
The master sergeant, whom the Army hasn't identified, also is accused of later lying to investigators. His attorney, John Galligan, says the soldier's charged with three counts of dereliction of duty and four counts of making false official statements.
Galligan says said prosecutors are recommending a court-martial on the charges that carry a maximum penalty of a bad conduct discharge and one year in military jail.
The defense attorney says the Army's trying to make a scapegoat of his client for the June death of Sergeant Lawrence Sprader, which he calls a tragic accident.
