Meth Lab found in Hays County
09:53 PM CDT on Sunday, October 21, 2007
Hays County deputies following up on a routine traffic disturbance in the Bear Creek subdivision found a functioning meth lab.
The lab is the first one discovered in Hays County.
Deputies were called out to S. Madrone Trail near the Travis/Hays County line after getting complaints of reckless driving Sunday evening. The residents who called in the complaint say they knew who was behind the wheel and identified him to authorities as one of their neighbors.
Once the sheriff’s department identified their suspect, they found he had an outstanding warrant.
When the deputies visited his home, they found a lot more.
Within a short time hazardous materials crews, narcotics officers, emergency personnel and additional law enforcement from San Marcos, Driftwood, and Hays and Travis counties. A large portion of South Madrone road was blocked off to through traffic during clean-up while Austin and San Marcos Haz-Mat crews cleaned up.
"Those two teams are going to work to shut this lab down and load up the evidence and take it away,” said Leroy Opiela of the Hays County Sheriff’s office.
Deputies describe the lab as an individual sized lab. The suspect is in custody with Hays County, but authorities have not released his name.
