Oil tycoon pushes energy plan in Austin

One of America’s biggest oil tycoons is trading in the black gold for wind power. T. Boone Pickens visited Austin Thursday to push his plan to end America’s addiction to foreign oil.
In the Texas Union ballroom, T. Boone Pickens drew out his energy plan in black and white.
He explained to a crowd of about 500 his plan to use wind power to generate 20 percent of the country's electricity and end America’s dependency on foreign oil by tapping into domestic natural gas to fuel personal vehicles.
"I practice what I preach. I have a Honda GX Civic -- that's a natural gas vehicle,” said Pickens.
Not everyone in the audience is on board.
Andy Wilson of Public Citizen says his group supports Pickens' plan for wind energy. It's the natural gas proposal that doesn't add up to a long term fix.
“For everyone to do it would just be too expensive. The price of natural gas would go up -- we'd have to start importing it from overseas and replace imports from the Middle East and Venezuela with imports from Russia and Indonesia. It's just not a good idea,” said Wilson.
Much of the audience questions and criticism also focused on natural gas.
Pickens admits it's a quick fix, but that's exactly what he's going for.
“The oil issue is $700 billion every year. We can't afford that, so it has to be fixed quick, and you have a way to do that. I have given a solution -- in five years we can make a vast difference in energy in America,” said Pickens.
Pickens has sat down and talked with both presidential candidates about the Pickens plan.
Neither McCain nor Obama have endorsed it.
Pickens wanted to clarify that while he traditionally votes Republican, he has not yet chosen to vote for either candidate in the presidential race.
