City of Austin sued over animal shelter plans
10:14 AM CDT on Tuesday, October 2, 2007
The City of Austin faces a lawsuit over plans to move the Town Lake Animal Shelter.
Four groups, including the Govalle/Johnston Terrace Neighborhood Planning Team, Old West Austin Neighborhood Association, PODER, and Fix Austin say the City violated The Texas Open Meetings Act.
They say city officials did not give the public notice about deliberations involving moving the shelter from downtown to an East Austin neighborhood.
Last November, voters approved $12 million for a new animal shelter.
The city intended to build it in East Austin, but since then critics said the move would increase the number of animals killed at the shelter.
