Alcoa to lay off 660 workers at Milam County facility
05:32 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 30, 2008
A global manufacturer is laying off 660 employees from its production facility in eastern Central Texas, the company announced Tuesday on its website.
Alcoa says it is cutting back production at its aluminum smelter in Rockdale, Texas, located in Milam County. The company blames the local power supply and overall market conditions.
Alcoa already laid off 160 employees. As a result of the new round of layoffs, only 140 people will continue to work at the plant. The company says it will still operate its aluminum atomizer and its anode operations.
Layoffs will take place in phases, with most happening in late November and early December.
