ACL Fest rocks Austin Saturday

10:30 PM CDT on Saturday, September 27, 2008

50 acts, eight stages and tens of thousands of fans; the music of the Austin City Limits Festival radiated through Zilker Park Saturday.

Each band took over the stage and the crowd for about an hour.

The festival, now in its seventh year, has garnered more than national attention.

“Me and my friend Mark came down from Canada,” said fan Rob Elliott.

“(We came) from Monterrey, it’s like 8 hours from here,” said another fan from Mexico.

Plenty of local music fans relished in the sounds too.

“This is going to be my fifth year. I love the people here,” said local music fan, Adam Paxton.

Some people even snuck away from other obligations to check out the scene.

“I’m supposed to be home studying but Sharon Jones (and the Dap Kings are) in town, so, study be damned,” said fan Courtney Morris.

Some musicians took their time off stage to blend in with the crowd.

“I was playing yesterday on the WaMu stage with my group Antibalas…so we came back today just to have fun,” said musician Martin Perna.

Admission tickets for Saturday's festival sold-out.

“Look at this seriously take this in…do you see this? This is amazing. This is the place to be. If you’re not here, you’re no where,” said fan, Mark McMasters.

The music pumping through the park kept the crowd from burning out in the 90 degree heat. For those in the crowd that couldn’t get close enough to the stage there were big screen televisions showcasing the talent and lots of lawn to lie back on. The fans with extra energy used the lawn space as a dance floor.

"We're actually a little tired. We saw Manu Chao last night. We pretty much bounced up and down for an hour and half straight so we're actually low key right now," said Elliott.

The fans are bound to be a little more tired Sunday when the festival wraps up. For now, though, the crowd is keeping up with the beat.

“We're just going to keep dancing...keeping having a good time,” said Elliott.
