Governor's new rental address not in Austin city limits

06:35 PM CDT on Thursday, September 27, 2007

Associated Press

AUSTIN -- Governor Rick Perry's opulent new rental home is not technically in Austin even though the state constitution requires him to live within the city limits.

Perry next month is moving to the exclusive neighborhood for at least one year while the downtown Governor's Mansion undergoes renovations.

The new digs will cost the state $9,900 per month.

Perry spokesman Robert Black says the rental home, in a gated community, is: "in the extraterritorial jurisdiction of Austin."

Black says that means the place is within two miles of the Austin city limits.

Black says the house is temporary -- and Perry's residency is still the mansion.

Black says the law says your residency is determined by where you intend to return to.

The rental house is in an unincorporated area, not taxed by Austin and is about 14 miles from the historic Governor's Mansion.
