Grand juries no-bill Benson over 2 Texas arrests
06:19 PM CDT on Thursday, September 25, 2008
Former Longhorn football star Cedric Benson has been cleared of all charges in connection with two alcohol-related arrests this summer.
Benson was arrested in May on Lake Travis and charged with boating while intoxicated. He was also arrested in June in downtown Austin and charged with driving while intoxicated.
But Thursday two different grand juries declined to indict Benson in either case.
Defense attorney Sam Bassett told The Associated Press that the former NFL player is "elated." Bassett said the grand jury reviewed the charges of boating while intoxicated, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated, and then decided there was no probable cause in the cases.
Bassett said the panel heard from law officers and the former University of Texas star.
Benson was released by the Chicago Bears this summer after his second arrest.
Bassett, in a statement, says Benson is eager to have an opportunity to again demonstrate that he's a quality running back who can contribute to a winning team.
