WWII memorial dedicated at State Capitol
02:30 PM CDT on Wednesday, August 15, 2007
State officials Wednesday dedicated Texas' first World War II memorial.
The permanent statue on the State Capitol grounds honors the more than 830,000 Texans who served for the United States during World War II.
More than 22,000 them died during the fighting.
The memorial is located on the north side of the Capitol next to the Texas Supreme Court building. It is an exact replica of the Texas pillar at the national World War II Memorial in Washington D.C.
A number of veterans, their family and their friends were in attendance. Governer Rick Perry welcomed the veterans the memorial honors and thanked them for their bravery.
August 15 is VJ Day -- the official end of World War II.
