Bad check writers rounded up
04:38 PM CDT on Thursday, August 9, 2007
Hot check writers are being rounded up all over the state this month in response to the thousands of theft-by-check cases in Texas each year.
Offenders have been arrested at their homes or workplaces.
In Williamson County, 30 arrests have been made so far.
"I'm bound by a court order to arrest a person, and when I come in contact with them -- once I verify the warrant -- they're going to jail. No other way around it," said Deputy Wayne Philpott, Williamson Co. Pct. 4 constable.
The amnesty period for offenders expired last Friday.
Williamson County officials say the roundup has helped them clear more than 200 thef-by-check cases and collected more than $57,000 in restitution and fees.
Thousands of dollars in restitution and fees are collected each year during the statewide hot check roundups.
