More than a dozen honored for bravery on UT Tower anniversary
05:24 PM CDT on Friday, August 1, 2008
Forty-two years to the day after they risked their lives during the University of Texas tower massacre, more than a dozen people have been honored for their bravery.
A Travis County building in Oak Hill, about 12 miles from the tower, will now be known as the "Tower Heroes Building."
One plaque unveiled Friday, had the names of 10 law officers and four civilians who braved the gunfire on August 1, 1966 to try and save lives.
On that August day, Charles Whitman killed his wife and mother, then held the UT campus hostage from the tower for more than 90 minutes.
Fourteen people were killed in what was then the worst mass murder in U.S. history.
