Council approves settlement in lawsuit against APD officer
10:24 AM CDT on Friday, July 25, 2008
The family of a mentally-ill man who was beaten by an Austin police officer will receive a $55,000 settlement.
The city council Thursday approved the settlement from the federal lawsuit filed against Officer Gary Griffin.
Court documents say Griffin found Joseph Cruz asleep on a bus stop bench in July 2006 and beat him, breaking his nose, when he did not wake up.
Cruz has schizophrenia.
Griffin was fired for using excessive force but that decision was later overturned.
