Man wanted in downtown attack
10:27 PM CDT on Thursday, July 24, 2008
Austin police are looking for a man who tried to rob a woman at gunpoint and attempted to sexually assault her.
It happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, July 19th, in the 1400 block of West 6th Street in Clarksville.
Police say the woman walking alone was approached by a hispanic man in his twenties. He showed her a silver handgun and demanded money. Before the woman could respond about the money, detectives say the man forced her by gunpoint into a dark, grassy area where he attempted to sexually assault her.
Police say the woman then began to scream for help and that's when the suspect ran away.
"When we leave at night, I'm always real aware. If I'm by myself I'll even call a friend and say, hey can you stay on the phone with me until I get to my car and lock my doors, just to be on the safe side" says Linda Asaf, a fashion designer who works in the area of the attempted robbery and assault.
On Thursday Austin detectives released a composite sketch of the suspect. It shows an hispanic man in his twenties, between 5'7" and 5'8" with a stocky build. He's clean-cut with plucked eyebrows. He was last seen wearing a dark blue shirt and an orange baseball cap.
Anyone with information is encouraged to call Crimestoppers at 472-TIPS.
Any tip leading to an arrest could mean a reward of up to $1,000.
