Acevedo looks back, forward after one year

It's been one year since Austin hired a California Highway Patrol chief to take over the city's police department.
APD Chief Art Acevedo, Austin's first Hispanic police chief, is still looking toward the future in what he wants to accomplish. He says the key to trust between police and the community is familiarity.
"When I went through the hiring process I made it real clear to everybody I was going to be very visible. I was going to be very known in the community and, most importantly, that the community would know my heart," Acevedo said, looking back over the past year. "With trust comes success as individuals and as a community. So as we move forward we really want to be the conduit as a department to bring different neighborhoods together, to bring races together and to bring the whole community together.
While Acevedo has been largely well received, he still has his critics.
The Austin Police Association voiced strong opposition over the firing and suspending of several officers, and in the past year, violent crime in Austin has risen 6 percent.
Acevedo says Comstat is the answer.
"It's real time data. We're going to have three operational areas. You'll have a 30-day, week and a 24 hour data. And obviously year long data for comparison," he said. "What we are going to focus on is one -- being proactive and constantly moving our resources and being predictive hopefully on crime so we can stay on top of it. Two -- we really want to stay on top of our crime-fighting efforts and our traffic safety efforts."
The plans include focusing on drug problems that result in property crime and taking drunk drivers off the streets.
