Pelosi, Gore address Netroots Nation convention
03:03 PM CDT on Saturday, July 19, 2008
The Netroots Nation continued its annual meeting Saturday with an address from US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a surprise visit from former Vice President Al Gore.
Of course, as fast as information spreads on blogs some of the surprise may have been spoiled.
Netroots Nation is an organization of thousands of liberal bloggers aimed at using the internet medium to influence politics.
They’re obviously being taken seriously, as Pelosi kicked off the Saturday’s agenda. Pelosi talked about their past victories and future plans. She emphasized communication’s power in the Democrats’ efforts to end the war.
“Young people we know are communicating with each other, texting, you name it, every possible way internationally. So, the communication will take place. The question is, what will the policy be to match the enthusiasm?” said Pelosi.
Al Gore also emphasized the group’s influence.
"You will look back many years from now and you will tell your grandchildren about coming here to Austin Texas and about the first two meetings of netroot nation and you will tell them that this was the beginning of an effort that was historic to reclaim the integrity of American democracy," said Gore.
The talk went smoothly, despite some shouted protests about the war and President Bush. Also brought up were issues of energy policy, environment, and other top political issues.
This year the convention has about 2,000 bloggers in attendance, and runs through Sunday.
