Boaters ready for first lake weekend in weeks
06:39 PM CDT on Thursday, July 19, 2007
Lake Travis this weekend will be open to boaters for the first weekend in nearly a month. The Lower Colorado River Authority opened the lake to recreational boating on Monday.
"We were out there the first day on Monday when they opened at 1:00. We were out here. It was fine. There's not a substantial amount of debris," said Greg Lawrence, boater.
Although the LCRA has deemed the water safe for boaters, they issued a warning Thursday for those on the lake to watch for hazards.
"Please remember that Lake Travis is very different from the lake you experienced the last time that you were on this lake," said Joe Beal, general manager of the LCRA. Thursday, Beal issued this warning.
"The lake is deeper now. There are more currents now. After the flood events that we've experienced, there is debris on the lake that was not there before," said Beal.
"We were out here whenever it was at its peak level and the debris was just unbelieveable. There was just whole trees, 30, 40, 50 foot long that were just completely uprooted, roots and all, floating out here," said Chris Hernandez, with the LCRA and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's "Nobody's Waterproof" water safety campaign.
While there are still three vehicles still somewhat submerged in the water, along Emerald Point Marina, near Carlos and Charlie's, most hazards are hidden.
"Down here, it's really hit or miss on debris," said Hernandez.
Lawrence says he is cautious, but confident the water is safe.
"I think things are fine, I mean it's nice out there," said Lawrence. Come this weekend, it could also be crowded.
The LCRA says the water quality on Lake Travis is back to pre-flood conditions, barring additional rainfall.
