10:41 PM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008
A church and a cycling community are coming together early Sunday morning for a memorial bike ride honoring a slain cyclist.
Michael Argall, 45, a cycling coach, Travis County Sheriff's employee and Air Force veteran, was killed June 28th on U.S. 290 in Fredericksburg.
The woman who hit him told investigators the sun got in her eyes and she couldn't see him.
The driver has not been charged however the accident is still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety.
"He was a very experienced rider and he was generally very careful. He knew what to do and what not to do on the road," said Carey Jung, a friend and fellow cyclist who rode with Argall multiple times.
Friday evening, some members of Austin's cycling community met to create a ghostbike in Argall's memory. A ghostbike is a real bicycle painted all white. It sits at the spot where a cyclist was killed and it acts as a memorial.
The volunteers KVUE News found Friday working on the ghostbike hope it serves as a reminder to both drivers and cyclists about the importance of sharing the road in peace.
"So my question is, when is it going to stop? How many more bikes do we have to paint before things change?," asked one of the volunteers painting the ghostbike.
Sunday's memorial ride for Michael Argall begins at 8 a.m. in the main parking lot at Lake Pflugerville.
