Family settles UT hazing death suit
06:26 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 15, 2008
AUSTIN -- The family of a University of Texas freshman, who died during a hazing incident in 2005, has settled a lawsuit against the Houston native's fraternity.
It was in December of 2005 that Phanta "Jack" Phoummarath died of acute alcohol poisoning after a night of binge drinking while attending a party at the Lambda Phi Epsilon fraternity. Three members of the fraternity were charged in the 18-year-old's death, each pleading no contest, and were given two years deferred adjudication.
On Monday, Phoummarath's family announced they had settled their lawsuit against the fraternity. Details of the settlement were not released, but the family's attorney Randall Sorrels said an educational video called “Enough is enough” was created with the proceeds of the settlement to educate people on the dangers of hazing and binge drinking.
