It's a call for help that is drawing response nationwide. A recent fire swept through a U.S. barracks in Iraq leaving some Marines with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Replacing items lost in the fire is just one goal of Operation Interdependence and its Central Texas volunteers.

A photo shows a fire that burned the barracks at a Marine Entry Point into Fallujah, Iraq.  Members of Company L, 3rd Battalion, 6th Maine Regiment lost everything. It happened June 25, and immediately e-mails went out asking for help.

"I was concerned because I knew the Marines lost everything except the clothes on their backs,” said Nina Gayheart.

Gayheart is the Area Manager of O.I., Operation Interdependence, a non-profit group that collects donations and then ships them to military members. O.I. was among the first to respond to the fire.

"The best thing for us to do was to try and get those personal items I-Pods, CD players, whatever replaced as soon as possible,” said Gayheart.

Through its nationwide efforts, O.I. successfully replaced most items lost in the fire. Now volunteers are ready to return to their on-going goal.

"Right now we have 102 boxes ready to ship," said Janet Wright, volunteer. She explains how each box holds baggies full of items for 50 soldiers - everything from candy and snacks to toiletries. But there's also one item included that you can't buy anywhere.

“It is the personal notes that are put into each baggies for each soldier that is the heart warming message they receive from home that means so much to them," said Wright.

The cause of this fire is still under investigation. Nina Gayheart says it won't be the last disruption to military life overseas. That's why she says the consistency and comfort provided by Operation Interdependence is more important than ever to all service men and women.

O.I. could use donations of personal items, volunteers and more office space.
