The neighborhood spent years just to finally shut down the Holly Street Power Plant.  Now they’re concerned a five-story mixed-use condominium will tear their community apart.

“We’re concerned with the magnitude of the project, the size of the project, a five-story facility right in the middle of a neighborhood that’s zoned single family,” said Gavindo Fernandez, who lives a block away from the proposed condo project and is against it.  “I would have to move out because of the high increase in taxes this type of facility would generate.”

Fernandez doesn’t think the project is compatible with the community and is afraid the development will have a negative impact by increasing property taxes, forcing existing Latino homeowners to move.

“We're already experiencing a small amount of Latino homeowners having to sell because of the increase in taxes.  This would only elevate that movement,” he said.

Fernandez and de Leon are not alone.  Most neighbors oppose the condo project despite the fact units will be moderately priced from $150-200,000.

Members of the community are mobilizing to fight the project.  They held a meeting Monday night to talk strategy.

Neighbors are vowing to fight for their community and way of life.

“The only compromise I see is that the developer will build something that this property is zoned for, and that is (for) single family homes,” said Fernandez.

The developer of the condominium project could not be reached for comment.
