A senior campaign staffer for U.S. Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, has been exposed for posting numerous pro-Cornyn comments under a fake online name.

"He was hiding and concealing who he was, and trying to push press to write different stories than they might naturally have written. That's unethical at best. Because he was trying to do it as a paid staffer of the campaign," said Matt Glazer, editor of Burnt Orange Report, the blog where many of the comments appear.

Glazer discovered by tracing an obscure email address that commenter "Buck Smith" was actually Dave Beckwith, a Texas Republican operative who works for both Cornyn's campaign and his Senate office.

"I would suggest you talk to him," said Cornyn, when asked about the situation on Tuesday.

In more than 80 comments on Burnt Orange Report, Beckwith/Buck Smith defends Cornyn, blasts Democratic challenger Rick Noriega and even once praised himself saying, "I personally believe Beckwith deserves a raise and/or promotion" for his role in a web video for Cornyn.

"Every campaign I've ever been involved in, we stand by our message for better or worse. We don't try to hide that message, and we don't try to give it by somebody else," said Glazer.

KVUE asked a Cornyn spokesman whether the Senator stands by his staffer's anonymous comments.

"Absolutely not," said spokesman Kevin McLaughlin. "Buck Smith speaks for himself."

Beckwith remains on the Senator's staff.

"I don't know everything he wrote about me. I think there are a lot of things that go on the Internet, sometimes we enjoy them, sometimes they seem pretty outrageous," Cornyn said.

So does the Senator condone anonymous commenting by his staff? The campaign had no comment.
