Rising lakewaters affecting 4th of July business along Lake Travis

The Fourth of July party on Lake Travis has been cancelled due to high water.

Every year, thousands of people fill the lake.  But on Friday, authorities announced the lake will likely stay closed through next week’s holiday.

The water is rising so high out at Lake Travis that Carlos and Charlie’s had to cancel their concert with 10,000 Maniacs.

First the businesses on the lake were cursed with the drought.  Now, they feel like they’re being cursed with the other extreme.

At this time of year, campers are normally lining up to get into Windy Point Park.  But rising lake waters are changing all of that.  Lake water has consumed five acres of the park, leaving park owner Richard Barstow only an acre-and-a-half to squeeze everyone into.

An aerial photograph shows the flooding along Volente Park.

“You can physically see it coming up, like a bathtub.  I stuck a stick in the water, I (went) out there half an hour later and you could hardly find the stick.  It's crazy,” he said.

Windy Park isn’t the only water-logged business.  Volente firemen turned away visitors to Volente Beach because water is now spewing across one of the main entrances.

“We were having plans to be on the lake this weekend and it's absolutely unbelievable.  I've never seen anything like this before,” said Jean Baeslack, a tourist from Ohio.

Tourists are not alone in their pain.  Hurting too are people like Devan Dorsett, a bartender in Volente.

“It's going to hurt pretty bad but … we'll do the best we can.  I'll make the best of it,” he said.

An employee of Carlos and Charlie’s told KVUE that they expect to do only 40-percent of the business they’d do on any given weekend.
