Burglars targeting Austin area dog park
06:34 PM CDT on Friday, June 27, 2008
Crooks have their eyes on a new target -- dog parks.
Car burglaries have increased so much at Bull Creek dog park, dog owners have already met with police. They say crooks target Bull Creek for the same reason dog owners frequent it.
Tara Pickell brings her dogs out to Bull Creek dog park for a good run. But while they're socializing, crooks are burglarizing.
"We've had two this summer here at this parking lot. On the west side of 360 at our other parking lot there are dozens of incidents that have happened over the last six months," said Skip Cameron, president of the Bull Creek Foundation. He's hoping to catch the brazen criminals.
"The first one that happened this summer happened at 12 noon -- I mean -- middle of the day," said Cameron.
Hiding valuables hasn't worked either.
"The criminals are just getting smarter, and know that people are smart enough not to leave things out in plain view, and they just go ahead and breaking, smashing and rummaging through as quick as they can and leaving," said Debra Bailey, founder of the Bull Creek Off-Leash Dog Group.
The two groups have both met with Austin police. APD will increase patrols, but in order to take a real bite out of these crimes, they say park-goers need to act as the watchdog.
"It's complacency, I think. A lot of people come out here on a regular basis, and so we all kind of feel like this is our park, and part of our home, and so we need to take a more active role of cleaning up the park, and making sure that we're aware of people around in the park," Bailey said.
