Rebuilding community trust is one goal of the new incoming sheriff of Bastrop County.

Rosanna Abreo, a one time trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety, has been selected to replace former Sheriff Richard Hernandez, who resigned last month after being indicted on corruption charges.

"It's unfortunate for him and his family and for any reflection on the community and the county but the people that work at Bastrop County Sheriff's Office are good people and do good work," said Abreo.

She will take office on Monday.

Change is apparent from all sides at the Bastrop County Sheriffs Office.

But now change and new hope come in the form of the county's first woman sheriff.

Abreo says she will now work to help build back the credibility of the office and the morale of its workers.

"Anything like what has occurred affects level of security and how they feel about their work.  I just would assure them that if things continue on, if people are doing a good job, they have nothing to fear at all," said Abreo.

She has 17 total years experience in law enforcement, with 13 of those spent with the DPS including stints on the swat team and in the special crimes unit.

"As a court, we're excited about having Ms. Abreo come aboard," said county judge Ronnie McDonald. "She knows how to work with the community; she knows how to work with the leadership.  We're excited about what's she's going to bring to the sheriff's department."

McDonald says Abreo's diverse background in law enforcement, business and time served as a school board member for six years in Elgin won over the court.

Abreo will serve out the remainder of Hernandez's term, which runs about 18 months.
