Book tour brings McClellan home
03:04 PM CDT on Monday, June 23, 2008
Former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan was in Austin Saturday, just one day after testifying on Capitol Hill.
McClellan was at Book People, signing copies of his new book, “What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington’s Culture of Deception.” He also spent 90 minutes taking questions from an audience of about 250 people.
On Friday, McClellan testified before the House Judiciary Committee Friday to talk about his book and the allegations about the Bush White House he made in it.
McClellan said Saturday that he felt good about his testimony. He also said that the feedback from the public on his current book tour has been “very supportive. People are looking at the larger message in the book and I think a lot of people are dismayed with the way things are in Washington right now on both sides. I never expected (the book) to take off like it has. I’m very pleased with the way people are reacting and responding to it.”
“It was an interesting insight into the White House,” said Wayne Huffman, about McClellan’s book. Huffman attended the book signing on Saturday. “There are dog-eared pages where I think, ‘Wow, that’s really an insight into how American politics works.’ I’m having my children read it.”
McClellan’s mother, former state comptroller Carole Keeton Strayhorn, was also at the book signing. She says Texans are telling it to her straight.
“People I do not know, (they come up to me and) they say to tell Scott thank you,” said Strayhorn. “It takes courage to do what he’s done.”
McClellan still has his detractors. One person was heard to ask just outside of Book People if “that weasel was still inside?”
The one question that got the most buzz was when someone asked who McClellan plans on voting for in November. He said he’s still undecided.
