Central Texas prepares for grass fire outbreaks
12:33 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2008
The brief rains that hit parts of the Austin area Tuesday afternoon won't be enough to get Central Texas out of harm's way when it comes to the threat of wildfires.
Tuesday morning, Travis County commissioners issued a county-wide burn ban. So too have six other counties in the area: Bastrop, Hays, Caldwell, Burnet, Llano and Blanco.
On Monday in anticipation of impending wildfires, the Texas Forest Service began staging heavy equipment in Fredericksburg such as bulldozers and a twin engine plane which will be used to fight wildfires from the air.
"We're seeing more aggressive fire behavior at this point in June than we typically do," said Lexi Maxwell with the Texas Forest Service.
Maxwell said the main reason for that is all of the rain that central Texas received in 2007.
The rain caused native grasses to grow in abundance which are now brown and brittle.
So far this year, 116 wildfires have burned across Texas consuming more than 54,000 acres.
The Texas Forest Service said that 93 percent of all wildfires are caused by human error, which is why the agency is hoping to get the word out about being especially careful over the next few weeks.
"Extinguish smoking materials carefully, be careful, don't drive and park in dry grass, be careful if you're welding outside, and if you're cooking or barbecuing make sure you do that over dirt or pavement," said Maxwell.More headlines
